{"id":4909,"date":"2024-02-27T14:42:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T11:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/?p=4909"},"modified":"2024-02-27T14:52:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T11:22:24","slug":"masters-students-are-now-eligible-for-a-3-year-work-permit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/en\/masters-students-are-now-eligible-for-a-3-year-work-permit\/","title":{"rendered":"Master\u2019s students are now eligible for a 3-year work permit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starting today, international students studying in master&#8217;s programs that are less than two years in length, are eligible for a three-year\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/post-graduation-work-permit-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post-graduation work permit<\/a>\u00a0(PGWP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before today, the length of an issued PGWP was correlated with the length of a program of study. However, in recognition that master\u2019s students are placed to perform well in Canada\u2019s labour market,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ircc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada<\/a>\u00a0(IRCC) has chosen to expand the eligibility for these students to receive longer work permits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The length of issued PGWPs for students in programs of study other than at the master\u2019s level will continue to correspond with the length of study program, to a maximum of three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students in programs at PGWP-eligible\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/designated-learning-institution-list.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designated learning institutions<\/a>\u00a0(DLIs)\u2014the only schools in Canada authorised to accept international students\u2014that are at least two years in length are also eligible for a longer, three-year PGWP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the weeks ahead, IRCC will also amend rules for spousal work permits for international students at an undergraduate level. This means only spouses of students at the master\u2019s and doctoral level will be eligible to receive a spousal work permit. This change will not have any impact on\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/inland-spousal-common-law-sponsorship-open-work-permit-pilot-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spousal open work permits<\/a>\u00a0for the spouses or conjugal partners of Canadian citizens or\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-immigration-residency-obligations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permanent residents<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What are the PGWP eligibility criteria?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To be eligible for a PGWP, international students must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have completed studies in an academic, vocational or professional training program that is at least eight months long, at an eligible DLI;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have studied in a program that led to a degree, diploma or certificate;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Held full-time student status in Canada during every academic session of the program or programs of study completed, which should be indicated on the PGWP application (with certain exceptions allowed);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have received a transcript and an official letter from an eligible DLI confirming that the applicant has met the requirements to complete their program of study (both of which must be included in the PGWP application);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have graduated from a public post-secondary institution such as a:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">College;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trade or technical school;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">University;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CEGEP (in Quebec);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Private post-secondary school (in Quebec) that operates under the same rules as public schools in Quebec;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Private secondary or post-secondary school (in Quebec) that offers qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer and results in the issuance of a dipl\u00f4me d\u2019\u00e9tudes professionnelles (DEP) or an attestation de sp\u00e9cialisation professionnelle (ASP); or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Canadian private school that can award degrees under provincial law (for example, Associate, Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s or Doctorate degree) but only if the student was enrolled in a study program that leads to a degree as authorised by the province.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any of these educational institutions must be a DLI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0As of September 2024, students attending a program that utilises a curriculum licensing framework (where a private college has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college) will no longer be eligible to apply for a PGWP.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starting today, international students studying in master&#8217;s programs that are less than two years in length, are eligible for a three-year\u00a0post-graduation work permit\u00a0(PGWP).
