{"id":4931,"date":"2024-02-29T13:43:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T10:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/?p=4931"},"modified":"2024-02-29T15:10:25","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T11:40:25","slug":"can-i-travel-outside-canada-after-applying-for-a-work-permit-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/en\/can-i-travel-outside-canada-after-applying-for-a-work-permit-extension\/","title":{"rendered":"Can I travel outside Canada after applying for a work permit extension?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When a foreign national applies to extend their\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/working-in-canada.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian work permit<\/a><\/span>, they are free to leave Canada and come back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, upon returning to Canada, work permit extension applicants should be aware that one of three things will take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases, work permit applicants may need to return to Canada as a visitor instead of a temporary resident. This means applicants may not be able to continue working in Canada if they travel outside the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0The first two of the three following situations assume that the applicant has not yet received approval for their work permit extension.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Re-entry as a visitor<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Work permit extension applicants may be permitted to re-enter Canada as a visitor, meaning they cannot work upon their return until a decision has been made on their extension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At this time, permit extension applicants may also be asked to prove to an<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ircc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(IRCC) officer that they have enough money to support themselves in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Request to apply for a new work permit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Extension applicants may also be asked to apply for a new work permit at the port of entry upon their return to Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Note that IRCC does not clarify whether these applicants can immediately continue working in Canada if they apply at the port of entry when they return or if they need to wait for the new permit to be processed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Re-entry as a worker<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases, IRCC officers will determine that the applicant was granted their work permit extension while outside of Canada. In this case, the applicant may be allowed to return to Canada as a worker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Re-entry requirements as a work permit holder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While permitted to leave and re-enter Canada freely, work permit holders must also meet certain re-entry requirements to be allowed back into the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For instance, in addition to the permit itself, work permit holders must also have either a<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-temporary-resident-visa-visitor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temporary Resident Visa<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(also known as a visitor visa) or an\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/electronic-travel-authorization-eta-canadian-immigration-visitor-visa-exemptions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electronic Travel Authorization<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(eTA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Still, according to IRCC, \u201cHaving an eTA or a visa, along with your work permit, doesn\u2019t guarantee that we will let you back into Canada.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Visitor visas and eTAs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The re-entry requirements for temporary residents in Canada vary depending on an individual\u2019s situation, as requirements for re-entry are different for residents of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/electronic-travel-authorization-eta-canadian-immigration-visitor-visa-exemptions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visa-exempt countries<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and those who reside in visa-required countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Residents of visa-exempt countries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alongside their work permits, residents of visa-exempt countries require a valid passport and an eTA to re-enter Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to IRCC, eTAs are only required for those planning to travel to Canada by air. In other words, temporary residents \u201cdon\u2019t need an eTA if you\u2019re arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including cruise ship).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-4c515dccbf9a4f24f555f39b583ddf6b\" class=\"cicnewsads-4c515dccbf9a4f24f555f39b583ddf6b cicnewsads-in-article-2\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-1448099697\" class=\"cicnewsads-in-article-2\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-2480831343752-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0IRCC clarifies that eTAs are \u201cautomatically issued\u201d when an applicant\u2019s \u201cinitial work permit\u201d is approved. Details can be found in the applicant\u2019s letter of introduction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Residents of visa-required countries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Residents of visa-required countries will require \u201ca valid visa and a valid work permit to return to Canada\u201d for work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0IRCC clarifies that valid visas are not required for those who \u201creturn directly from a visit only to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the case that a resident\u2019s visitor visa has expired or was only valid for a single entry to Canada, they must\u202fre-apply for a visitor visa. In addition, residents of visa-required countries can use a valid visitor visa \u201cto travel to Canada until it expires.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A visitor visa will let you travel to Canada by plane, car, bus, train or boat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>eTAs for some citizens of certain visa-required countries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to IRCC, \u201celigible citizens of\u202fsome visa-required countries\u202fwill receive an eTA when they renew their work permit\u201d. The eTA is valid for five years or until the recipient\u2019s passport expires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">eTAs obtained by residents of visa-required countries can only be used when travelling to or through Canada by air on their way to their final destination.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a foreign national applies to extend their\u00a0Canadian work permit, they are free to leave Canada and come back.
