{"id":5049,"date":"2024-05-14T17:35:48","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T14:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/?p=5049"},"modified":"2024-05-14T17:35:48","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T14:05:48","slug":"getting-pr-after-graduating-from-a-masters-or-phd-program-as-an-international-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadaii.com\/en\/getting-pr-after-graduating-from-a-masters-or-phd-program-as-an-international-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting PR after graduating from a master\u2019s or PhD program as an international student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It may now be easier for students who come to Canada for a master\u2019s or Ph.D. program to obtain permanent residence (PR).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On February 15, 2024,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/ircc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada<\/a>\u00a0(IRCC)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2024\/02\/masters-students-are-now-eligible-for-a-3-year-work-permit-0242928.html#gs.6yyj3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enacted<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/post-graduation-work-permit-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Post-Graduation Work Permit<\/a>\u00a0(PGWP) policy that was\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2024\/01\/breaking-ircc-to-announce-a-two-year-cap-on-admissions-for-international-students-0142492.html#gs.6yyekt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first announced on January 22<\/a>\u00a0as one of many changes coming to Canada\u2019s international student system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This policy now means that international student graduates of master&#8217;s degree programs at Canadian\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/designated-learning-institution-list.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Designated Learning Institutions<\/a>\u00a0(DLIs) \u2013 the only post-secondary institutions authorized by IRCC to accept international students \u2013 are\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2024\/02\/masters-students-are-now-eligible-for-a-3-year-work-permit-0242928.html#gs.6yyj3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eligible for a three-year PGWP<\/a>. This is true even for students studying in master&#8217;s programs that are two years or less in length.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Before February 15, the validity period of a PGWP for master&#8217;s students was directly correlated to the length of the program of study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How does this make it easier to obtain PR in Canada?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The value of a PGWP lies in that it allows international student graduates to work in Canada once they complete a PGWP-eligible program at a DLI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Canadian work experience is valuable to those who later intend to pursue PR because many of Canada\u2019s immigration pathways either require or reward such experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, Canada\u2019s popular\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Express Entry<\/a>\u00a0application management system, which prioritizes a candidate\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-comprehensive-ranking-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comprehensive Ranking System<\/a>\u00a0(CRS) score, rewards candidates with a minimum of 80* additional CRS points for work experience acquired in Canada before they apply for PR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">*This point value is for Express Entry candidates without a spouse or common-law partner under the Core\/Human Capital Factors section of the Express Entry system. Candidates in other circumstances, such as those applying alongside their spouse\/partner, may receive\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-comprehensive-ranking-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a different number of CRS points.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-2f529a0115db7a575d879220e6893ba2\" class=\"cicnewsads-2f529a0115db7a575d879220e6893ba2 cicnewsads-in-article-1\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-1682837072\" class=\"cicnewsads-in-article-1\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-3499428298633-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Therefore, this expanded PGWP policy will make it easier for eligible students to obtain PR because it allows them more time to acquire valuable Canadian work experience, which they can then use on their immigration application.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other ways IRCC makes it easier for master&#8217;s and PhD students to immigrate to Canada<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Express Entry\u2019s CRS system rewards higher education<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Further to the value of a master&#8217;s or Ph.D. for Canadian immigration, the Express Entry CRS system rewards higher levels of education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Specifically, students with master&#8217;s and Ph.D. degrees are rewarded with the two highest CRS scores under \u201clevel of education\u201d by the Express Entry system.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Master\u2019s students:<\/strong>\u00a0126 points with a spouse\/common-law partner; 135 points without<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ph.D. students:<\/strong>\u00a0140 points with a spouse\/common-law partner; 150 points without<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Simply, more CRS points gives candidates a better chance of receiving an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-invitation-to-apply-for-permanent-residence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Invitation to Apply<\/a>\u00a0(ITA) for Canadian PR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Many provinces\/territories have dedicated Provincial Nominee Program streams for Masters\/PhD students<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students who obtain either a master&#8217;s or Ph.D. degree in Canada also open themselves up to various additional\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/provincial-nomination-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Provincial Nominee Program<\/a>\u00a0(PNP) streams.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-6eb142f1dcd77e0c33558be88538dbbc\" class=\"cicnewsads-6eb142f1dcd77e0c33558be88538dbbc cicnewsads-in-article-2\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div id=\"cicnewsads-483277972\" class=\"cicnewsads-in-article-2\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-3149882341577-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a011 of Canada\u2019s 13 provinces and territories, excluding Quebec and Nunavut, operate a PNP<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is because many of Canada\u2019s top newcomer destination provinces, including Ontario and British Columbia, operate specific streams for students who graduate from these programs.
